Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto IV took home the Game of the Year award at Spike TV’s sixth annual Video Game Awards (VGA). The televised ceremony was held over the weekend, and was hosted by comedian and actor Jack Black.

Other notable winners included two awards for LittleBigPlanet and developer Media Molecule (Best PS3 game and Studio of the Year), as well as titles ranging from World of Goo (Best Independent Game) to Metal Gear Solid 4 (Best Performance by a Human Female, Best Original Score and Best Graphics) and Gears Of War 2 (Best Xbox 360 Game and Best Shooter).

This year’s event was also notable for the large number of new trailers debuting for upcoming games, in some cases giving audiences detail for the first time. Games spotlighted at the awards include Double Fine's Brütal Legend, just revealed to be published by Electronic Arts, Sony’s Uncharted 2: Amongst Thieves and God of War III, EA Sports' Fight Night: Round 4, Take-Two’s Mafia II and Grand Theft Auto IV: The Lost and Damned, Warner Bros.’ Watchmen: The End is Nigh and movie tie-in Terminator Salvation.

New Gears of War 2 map pack "Combustible" was also released at 12pm PST, after the new Xbox 360 download was announced at the Awards by model Marisa Miller. The new addition to the game features three new multiplayer maps: Flood, Gold Rush and Fuel Station.

"Big Name in the Game Female: Jenny McCarthy (Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3)"

Wait, so you can win "awards" now if you simply include a big Hollywood persona in your product? How is that, in any way, deserving of recognition?

Not to mention classifying Jenny McCarthy as a "big" name is kind've silly. What is this 1996? Video games can do better as far as big name female talent than Jenny McCarthy. She appeared at my last birthday in exchange for $220 and a warm meal.

Is it just me, or does the list above look like a shopping list of what is available for the holidays? hmmm... And, besides the 'World of Goo', 'Prof. Layton....', and 'LittleBigPlanet' titles, everything else seems to be a successful franchise. hmmm... Oh... and look at the publishers? hmmm... And, we certainly love our 'twitch' titles don't we? hmmm... Come on.... let's have a real rewards show not a pretty packaged ordeal. Let's talk about best core technology, best AI implementation, best character models, best designer, best composer and sound designer. And reward the people behind the games, not the publishers. They already get enough recognition in sales.

Does Spike TV know that it's possible to play games on your PC too? These are all console games...

Sadly, year after year, this is the biggest joke on TV. No reputable industry people show up for this and the reason is it's one big ad to sell product. It's not the Oscar of Video Games Spike TV wishes it was.

I seriously think it needs to be pulled as it is more of a mockery and makes video games look bad.
