NPD Top 20 Reveals Wii/DS Dominance, Single PS3 Entry

After yesterday's release of the top 20 video games for December 2008, the NPD Group today gave Gamasutra an extended list showing the top 20 console and handheld titles for the same month.

Software for Nintendo's platforms -- the Wii and the Nintendo DS -- took six of the top 10 positions on the chart.

As shown by the extended chart, those same platforms also claimed seven more positions on this expanded list of best-selling software.

Here is the full Top 20 list for U.S. console and handheld game sales in December 2008:

Nintendo's Wii Music, last month's #10 title, slipped to #11 in December's chart. For reference, the #10 title in December, Animal Crossing: City Folk (also for the Wii, and also by Nintendo) sold 497,000 units.

Other Wii titles in the top 20 (but outside the top 10) were Link's Crossbow Training (#17), Call of Duty: World at War (#19), and Shaun White's Snowboarding: Road Trip (#20).

The Nintendo DS took three additional titles in the extended software sales rankings. New Super Mario Bros., originally launched in May 2006, placed at #12, ahead of Personal Trainer: Cooking (#13), and Club Penguin: Elite Penguin Force (#15).

Bethesda's Fallout 3 for the Xbox 360 ranked #14 for the month, dropping two spots from its place on the November 2008 chart.

Guitar Hero: World Tour for the PlayStation 2 was #17 for the second month running, and the Xbox 360 version of EA's Madden NFL 09 placed 18th on the chart, rising from its berth at #20 on the November chart.

There was just one PlayStation 3 title in the Top 20 - Call Of Duty: World At War, already listed in the Top 10 at 9th place.

I wonder what Pachter says about those 500000 Animal Crossing Units, I remember him predicting this title would fail.

I find it utterly amazing that Wii Play is still selling like mad after all this time.

Oh wow, both Shaun White and the Wii version of World at War made it into the top twenty?

That's quite particularly impressive for Shaun White, which is meant to be played with the Balance Board.

I wonder if that means it's being bought by the expanded audience who already own Wii Fit, or if it's being played with the remote and nunchuck.

...or if core gamers are picking up Wii Fit so they can play Shaun White the way it was intended.

Wii- fit is very hard to come by, unless you are really dedicated to buying it. I think the expanded audience is indeed purchasing Shaun White. Wii-fit does have a larger install base than the PS3 at his point, so it is not surprising to see a Balance Board game, like Shaun White, perform well.

Nintendo's consoles in japan were named famicom or family computer so nintendo is just fulfilling their goal and doing very well at it. Not surprised that most games in that list are for the Wii. I was so happy to get a wii 2 years ago but am so disappointed by it's not friendly gameplay. As an old type gamer, the wii is impossible to enjoy in anything other than a sports or party game as shown here by the rankings.

The ranking shows that a good range of software can be enjoyed on the Wii. It also shows how foolish 3rd party developers and publishers are. If you put quality software on the console and advertise it to let people know it is there it will sell.

I don't think Wii play should count, as it comes with a controler, something most people buy anyway. This may be a good tip for future console makers - pack in a cheap game with the 2nd controler. If xbox gave free XBLA UNO with a 2nd xbox controler, that game would make the top 20 too most likely.
Plus - didn't Wii play come out in 2007? It says something about Wii owners when the top selling Wii game for last month is over 1 year old.
