Danish Hitman creator Io Interactive is taking a family-friendly focus with the development of Mini Ninjas, which casts a small hero on a quest against magical, evil Samurai.

Io Interactive was established by a partnership between 1997-founded Retro Moto and Nordisk Film, and was sold to Eidos in 2004.

Since then, the studio has created both Hitman and Kane and Lynch, and its founders re-formed the Retro Moto studio to focus on online games earlier in 2008.

Formerly being known for much more adult titles, Mini Ninjas, the studio's newest project. It will be published by Eidos in Fall 2009 on Wii, DS, Xbox 360, Windows PC and PlayStation 3. According to official information, the game stars tiny ninja Hiro who, with the help of his friends, uses magic and special ninja techniques to stop a Samurai warlord.

"Mini Ninjas represents a truly special game for us,” said Niels Jørgensen, General Manager of Io Interactive. "The whole team is very excited about it, because it is unique in so many ways."

"From the art style to the characters and the depth of the game – Mini Ninjas has that exceptional appeal, which is sure to keep both young and old very entertained."

I think we need more games that have broader appeal in the coming days, and it's good to see a developer starting down this path without having to resort to cutesy-ness.
