Japanese Charts: The Unshakable Dragon Quest IX

Square Enix's Dragon Quest IX for DS is enjoying a second week at the top of the Japanese software charts, although its second week sales at 613,000 units were significantly less than its chart-smashing 2.3 million unit debut.

But it's still a commanding lead -- according to new data from Media Create, the number two title, baseball title Pro Yakyuu Spirits 6 for PlayStation 3, was a distant second with a 74,000 unit debut.

It displaces Nintendo's MotionPlus-bundling Wii Sports Resort, which concedes one position to come in third, thus stepping Nintendo's own Tomodachi Collection DS down into the fourth spot.

The PlayStation 2 version of Pro Takyuu Spirits 6 debuted in the same week as its PlayStation 3 counterpart, in the fifth position.

The full Japanese video game Top 10 for the week ending July 19 is as follows:

1. Dragon Quest IX: Defenders of the Starry Sky (Square Enix, DS) - 613,000
2. Pro Yakyuu Spirits 6 (Konami, PS3) - 74,000
3. Wii Sports Resort 10 (Nintendo, Wii) - 72,000
4. Tomodachi Collection (Nintendo, DS) - 61,000
5. Pro Yakyuu Spirits 6 (Konami, PS2) - 50,000
6. Ys I and II Chronicles (Falcom, PSP) - 19,000
7. Boku no Natsuyasumi 4: Youth Detective Group in Seto - Me and the Secret Map (Sony, PSP) - 17,000
8. Hatsune Miku Project Diva (Sega, PSP) - 15,000
9. Monster Hunter Portable 2 G Best (Capcom, PSP) - 11,000
10. Pokemon Platinum (Pokemon, DS) - 9,000

Overall in the Japanese charts, the trend toward domination by portable titles continues, with seven out of 10 charting games for handheld platforms: three for DS games and four for PSP.
