Ubisoft is developing a game based on Universal Pictures' upcoming film Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, an action-comedy starring the ubiquitous Michael Cera.
Ubisoft Montreal is working on the companion game, planning a 2010 release alongside the movie. The film, to be co-written and directed by Shaun of the Dead's Edgar Wright, is itself based on a series of award-winning graphic novels published by Oni Press. The final book in the series will release at the same time as the film and game.
The film pits Cera, as Pilgrim, up against the seven deadly exes of Ramona, the girl of his dreams. Not only is the storyline heavily influenced by game culture, but Ubisoft says the storyline "mirrors the escalating structure of a video game."
"Scott Pilgrim is a special property, one that is both nostalgic and completely original," says Ubisoft worldwide licensing VP Christian Salomon. 'The game will provide a fun and unique experience to players and combine all the important elements seen in the film—action, romance, irreverent pop culture references and rock-n-roll."
Adds Bryan Lee O'Malley, creator of the original graphic novels: "As a gamer myself, it is a true pleasure to work closely with the talented team at Ubisoft to bring Scott to life on video game screens worldwide."
