Graphically-enhanced versions of the acclaimed PlayStation 2 games God of War 1 and 2 are both coming to PS3 on Blu-ray disc in the God of War Collection this holiday, Sony Computer Entertainment America said Monday.
Sony is selling the collection for $39.99, or $20 cheaper than a typical PS3 release. The compilation will arrive a few months before God of War III for PS3, which is due for release in March 2010 and is in development by Sony Santa Monica.
The collection will be more than just a straight port of the PS2 versions of each game. Both titles will sport 1280 x 720 resolution, will run at 60 frames per second, and feature anti-aliasing to smooth out the visuals. Sony is also adding trophy support for the games, so players can add awards to their virtual collection of other PS3 trophies.
While the original games were developed by Sony Santa Monica, Schott Rohde, VP of Worldwide Studios America, said the company partnered with Blast Factor developer Bluepoint Games on the conversions.
The God of War action games feature the Spartan Warrior Kratos, who fights through levels of monsters derived from Greek mythology. The two games were critical and commercial hits on PS2.

That's it? No 1080p? I remember 1080p resolution being a big selling point when the PS3 launched, but it seems like almost no games actually run at that res.
Its likely that the 720p resolution feature 4x AA.
Which which might not be possible at 1080p.
At least they have been able to port their engine from the PS2 to PS3.
If I had a choice though I would choose higher frame-rates over higher resolution, especially in a fast moving action titles like these.
I don't understand at all. What's wrong with 720p, why do you need 1080p? God of War was a masterpiece on the PS2, it was running rock steady 60fps and looked much more awesome than some of the 20-30 fps titles. It would be awesome in 160x200 8bit also. I can have a great deal of fun with an old nes/snes or megadrive game, witch looks like crap nowadays... but please tell me what the resoultion has to do with playing videogames?
We all know that the RSX is not a powerhouse, even if Sony not accepting it, its weaker than the Xenos, but I really don't care... Sony got better games atm, and good programmers will always be able to do better looking games on weaker hardware than the worse programmers on monster-machines. To be honest,I have a 2x 9600GT (OC@800Mhz) SLI combo in my 3,75Ghz DualCore2 PC, and 1080p is not running smooth in most of the titles and that rig is way more powerfull than the PS3 or the XBOX360.
By the way..you have to sit closer than 4 meters to a 40+ screen to see the extra details of 1080p, and sitting that close will eventually hurt your eyes sooner or later anyway.
PS3 is an awesome machine, its true SONY made a big mistake by accepting the lowend version of the 7800GTX with only 256Mb VRAM, but it's still an awesome piece of hardware, the industry would be less without it. The only problem that the new godlike Microsoft+ATI combo is winning on the press side (just how is winning on the PC side as well), because everybody cares about the fps and resolutions of unoptimized multiplatform titles and nothing about gameplay, and fun.
Please don't get me wrong, I do care about visuals and speed too, (for example, I only play games on CRT monitor at 120-150Hz because I hate the tearing and lag of the LCD monitors), and I always max out every settings in driver and game options... but seriously (and honestly please) .. GOD OF WAR not 1080P but only 720p is a problem????????????
I've never bought a Collector's Edition game before and I definitely would if they started incorporating this type of content into it. I'd gladly pay $100 for a Collector's Edition "Last Guardian" that included "Ico" and "Shadow of the Colossus" especially if they got SotC to run at a decent frame rate.
Tons of opportunity here with Ratchet and Clank, Sly Cooper, etc.

I also agree with @Brighton -- it's likely that the textures at longer draw distances just don't hold up in 1080p. In this instance, FSAA is probably the better choice for making the longer draw distances look decent.
I do hope that they re-author some of the more horrible looking palettized textures in real 16bpp. Playing God of War in PCSX2 (http://pcsx2.net) shows that upscaling alone doesn't really provide enough value in and of itself. Some gentle application of high-res bump and specular lighting that worked so well in Tenebrae Quake 2 and Freespace Open can also make a huge difference. Rare has also done a decent job of this with their XBLA re-issues of their N64 games. It doesn't take many changes to make a huge difference.
I'm also looking forward to getting some higher quality audio -- I hope they go 24-bit lossless for some of the more dramatic explosions and ground pounding effects. I'd much prefer that over a poorly done non-discrete semi-surround sound mix.
