iPhone App Store Exceeds 100,000 Available Programs

Apple's app cup runneth over, as the company has announced that the iPhone and iPod Touch App Store -- which it calls the "largest applications store in the world" has collected more than 100,000 pieces of software.

The manufacturer says users have download some 2 billion free and paid applications across 20 categories since the store opened on July 10, 2008, equating to 20,000 downloads per application on average, or 4.15 million total downloads per day.

iPhone application tracking site Apptism corroborates Apple's claim, tallying 100,707 pieces of software at the time of writing, with 18,554 games among those. Apple's own release did not break down app count by category.

The App Store "is clearly a major differentiator for millions of iPhone and iPod touch customers around the world," said Apple senior VP Philip Schiller, who called the device's SDK "the first great platform for mobile applications."

Jeff Smith of developer Smule, whose auto-tuning application I Am T-Pain has exceeded sales of 10,000 downloads a day, apparently agrees.

"Worldwide customer response to our I Am T-Pain App has exceeded our wildest expectations," he said. "The App Store has given us a unique opportunity to create and grow a very successful business, and we’re looking forward to an exciting future."
