Dragon Quest IX Tops Global Third Quarter With Nearly 4 Million Units

Square Enix's DS title Dragon Quest IX sold 3,925,000 units between its July launch and September -- making it the calendar quarter's top-selling title despite launching only in Japan. So says a new report that integrates metrics from the U.S.'s NPD group, the UK's GfK Chart-Track, and Japan's Enterbrain.

The success of DQIX played a major role in making Japan the only region among the world's three major video game markets -- which also include the U.S. and the UK -- to show unit sales growth over the quarter.

Wii Sports Resort was the quarter's second best-selling title. It launched late in June in Japan and late in July in the U.S. and the UK, and has sold a total 3,014,000 units across all three markets, although the U.S. release has thus far seen nearly twice as many units sold as in Japan.

The third calendar quarter's top 5 titles were as follows:

1. Dragon Quest IX (Square Enix, DS)
Total: 3,925,000
US: N/A
Japan: 3,925,000
UK: N/A

2. Wii Sports Resort (Nintendo, Wii)
Total: 3,014,000

Japan: 841,000
UK: 465,000

3. Madden NFL 2010 (Electronic Arts, Xbox 360/PS3/Wii/PS2/PSP)
Total: 2,612,000
US: 2,583,000
Japan: N/A
UK: 30,000

4. Pokemon HeartGold/SoulSilver (Nintendo, DS)
Total: 2,068,000
US: N/A
Japan: 2,068,000
UK: N/A

5. Halo 3: ODST (Microsoft, Xbox 360)

UK: 294,000

I wish that NPD/GfK/Enterbrain would give more than the top 5. When three of the top five titles are essentially single-territory (DQIX, Madden, Pokemon), it's a very narrow view of what constitutes strong global software sales.
