GCG Design Challenge Results Showcase Photographic Interpretation
Advertisement
In its latest Game Design Challenge, Gamasutra sister site GameCareerGuide asked its readers to create a game design based around a photograph -- and now you can see what they came up with.

The photo, seen here, depicts a firefighter scaling the face of a clock -- an image that's wildly open to interpretation and re-interpretation.

The best entries, as chosen by the GameCareerGuide staff, are listed below:

Will Armstrong and Jonathan Tavaris, Burning Man
Armstrong and Tavaris suggest a puzzle game in which a man on fire must traverse a flammable environment. The maze-like levels and lack of backtracking make for a tense experience.

Vladimir Villanueva, Artist, Radical Grappler
Vladimir Villaneuva's entry expands on the pictured action with a game that revolves around grappling and swinging off of fragile objects. A unique implementation of motion controls makes this one a natural fit for the Nintendo Wii.

Paolo Taje, Software Developer, SteepleDown
SteepleDown charges players with rescuing a family of kittens from a burning building. It may be a fairly straightforward approach to the prompt, but the concept detailed here is a robust yet realistic target for the iPhone.

Honorable Mentions

Marc Vousden, Brunel University, The Good Old Days
Eric Pearson, Michigan State University, To Protect and Serve
Carl Killian, UCF's Florida Interactive Entertainment Academy, The Fireman
Hector Mario Chavira Flores, Tec de Monterrey Sta. Anita high school, RUPTURE
Corey Standley and Kyle Hawkins, Students, Flashpoint Academy, The Inevitable
