Student Arrested In Dragon Quest Death Threat
Advertisement
According to Japanese television reports, a university student in Japan has been arrested after threatening to kill a friend after a disagreement over which Dragon Quest role-playing game was the best. Police used threatening Internet posts as evidence to charge the suspect, who is currently in custody.

The Dragon Quest series (usually known as Dragon Warrior in the West) is one of the best-selling game franchises in Japan, with individual titles selling over 3 million units in that country alone. Publisher Enix, before the company merged with Square, had to change its previous policy of releasing new editions on weekdays, after complaints of mass absenteeism from schools and places of work.

This latest story is perhaps the most worrying evidence of the level of obsession which some video game fans can reach, although this mania extends through many other branches of media, not just interactive entertainment. Though the preference of the intended victim is unclear, the arrested student apparently favored SNES iteration Dragon Quest VI.
