Scaleform Brings UI Production Tool To Unreal Engine 3

February 18, 2008 | By Brandon Boyer

Scaleform Corporation, a provider of graphical user interface and scalable vector graphics engines, has announced that its Scaleform GFx UI production tool has been integrated with Epic's Unreal Engine 3 as part of the developer's Integrated Partners Program.

Scaleform says it has worked with the UE3 customer base to develop "a cross-platform integration that can be rapidly adopted by all UE3 licensees," allowing studios to integrate UI elements from other tools like Adobe Flash into their games.

The Scaleform GFx media platform is built on the Scaleform VGx hardware accelerated vector graphics technology, which tessellates vector graphic shapes into triangles that modern 3D video cards can render. By converting the data into triangles, Scaleform VGx can output vector graphics many times faster than traditional software rasterizers, allowing it to be used within high-performance full-screen multimedia environments.

Scaleform says its tool allows developers to "move from a programmer-centric static UI development environment to an artist-driven dynamic UI and animated texture production pipeline."

Said Epic president Michael Capps, “We strive to not only enhance UE3 constantly, but also make sure that it works hand in hand with other premier middleware technologies. The incorporation of Scaleform GFx into UE3 is a significant milestone. The GFx integration gives our licensees better access to Scaleform’s best-selling technology, and lets them focus programming resources on making great games.”
