Survey: IT Pros Cite PS3, HDTV As Holiday Most Wanted

Global IT trade association CompTIA, whose goal is to “provide a unified voice” for the IT industry, has conducted an online poll of registered members of its website concerning what high-tech purchases, including video game consoles, its readers are interested in this holiday season. According to CompTIA, its website membership includes IT professionals who represent manufacturers, distributors, resellers, solution providers, ISPs, ASPs, software developers, e-commerce and telecom companies.

The survey, which polled 1,000 website visitors, was conducted from October 19 to November 14, and detailed 11 separate technologies, including the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Sony's console proved to be the most popular choice from respondents, with 21.2 percent of those surveyed listing the PlayStation 3 as their most wanted high-tech gadget this holiday season.

High-definition televisions were the second most picked choice by CompTIA's visitors with 18.1 percent of the vote, followed by the Xbox 360 with 10.2. Interestingly, these two consoles comprised the sole video game platform representation on the chart, with Nintendo's Wii console, as well as existing portable gaming platforms, not being considered.

IT professionals surveyed also noted a degree of apathy concerning the emerging high definition digital video media technologies in their survey responses. Just 2.4 percent of those surveyed noted that an HD-DVD player tops their list, though curiously no delineation was made between HD-DVD and Blu-ray technologies.

Other technologies filled out the survey as well, with digital cameras, smart phones, and MP3 players earning 9 percent, 5.8 percent, and 5.7 percent of the vote respectively. A home wireless network topped the list of 4.6 of those surveyed, while digital video recorders and tablet PCs took in 4.4 and 4.1 percent of the vote. The least requested high end technology, according to CompTIA's survey, was a portable media center, which was voted on by just 1.5 percent of those surveyed.
