Microsoft has confirmed that it is in the process of reviving 'dead' Xbox Live Gamertags for use.

Gamertags that were previously used may now be available for purchase, depending on whether the accompanying account is active or not.

Director of programming at Xbox Live Larry "Major Nelson" Hryb stated on his blog, "Starting today, we have begun the process of making previously used and unavailable (dead) Xbox Live Gamertags available."

He continued, "This process will take some time to complete, and no we can’t tell you when the Gamertag you want might be available."

"If you are interested, you should check back regularly as we are reviving Gamertags daily."

Changing a Gamertag costs 800 MS Points (equivalent to $10), and will not affect users' Gamerscore, achievements, friends or purchases.

The Xbox Live dashboard was recently redesigned, receiving a makeover and a number of Kinect-related features. Microsoft also changed the name of Xbox Live Silver to 'Xbox Live Free'.

oh great... can't wait to run in to all the numerous variations of Hang_the_N****s and KKK4Life. Xbox Live just got worse.

I thought they policed that a bit. I've heard of people having to change their gamertags because they were questionable, so I doubt that the examples you have there will be appearing.

On the other hand, you will still be able to hear those kinds of things direct from the mouths of 12 year olds.

Yay! At least all my 12 year old overlords will still be on Live.

Why I got on PSN.

Anyway, can I use "Cow Moolester" now?

I'm pretty sure they're not reviving banned names, lol.

Upon switching credit cards and the jump from Xbox to Xbox 360 I had to switch from my preferred GamerTag to a new one. For years I haven't been able to use my original one, and now I might reconsider it. Or maybe I'll use the $10 for a bunch of XBL Indie games...that might be a better purchase.
