Torchlight Sells 1M Copies Across All Platforms
Torchlight Sells 1M Copies Across All Platforms
July 6, 2011 | By Kyle Orland

Runic Games' dungeon crawling RPG Torchlight has sold over 1 million copies across its PC, Mac and Xbox 360 versions, the developer announced today.

The milestone comes after a fourth of July Steam sale and an Xbox 360 Deal of the Week promotion helped drive continued sales of the title, which was launched at a price of just $20 back in October of 2009.

Torchlight sold its first 500,000 copies just over six months after that PC release, and just before the launch of a Mac port. The XBLA version of the game, released in March, led to the "highest sales day ever" for any version the title, Runic said.

"We're very excited to share Torchlightís success with our fans and supporters," said Runic president Travis Baldree in a statement. "It's been a great ride so far and we canít wait to give everyone more of what they want in Torchlight II. It isnít every day you sell a million games. Weíre grateful to be here."

Last August, the company announced a Torchlight sequel planned for a Spring release, but later said the XBLA port for the original title delayed the sequel's planned release to July.

Runic formed in the summer of 2008 from the ashes of Mythos and Hellgate: London developer Flagship Studios.

With all the sales and different prices, I wonder what the average per-unit price ends up being.

I'd guess somewhere in the $7-$8 range. $8M is nothing to sneeze at.

Clearly people enjoy this type of gameplay, and yet Diablo 3 release dates are still yet to be announced...

I wouldn't be surprised if torchlight 2 gets released, makes another cool million sales, and we still don't see a Diablo 3 release date.

I don't see a problem with this.

Given the amount of time and effort that has already gone into Diablo 3, I'd be pissed if they rushed it out before it was finished to try to grab some of Torchlight's audience.

If anything, Torchlight's low price point and ease of play is building up the audience for Diablo style games.

Knowing what they went through prior to developing Torchlight, I think they deserve their success.
