Psychonauts Receives Mac Version, Steam Update, iOS App

Today, Double Fine Productions released a Mac version of its 2005 platformer Psychonauts, along with a new Steam update and a companion iOS app.

The Mac version of the game is now available via the Mac App Store and Steam, among other digital retailers, and was funded by the private investment firm Dracogen Strategic Investments.

Along with this new Mac version, the PC Steam version of the game will receive a free update that adds achievements, cloud saves, and a modified version of the game's notoriously difficult "Meat Circus" stage.

"We are really excited," said Double Fine President Tim Schafer, "to finally be answering fans' requests for a more difficult Meat Circus." Of course, Double Fine's official statement notes the stage has in fact been made easier, despite Schafer's claims.

In addition, Double Fine debuted The Psychonauts Vault Viewer, an iOS app that showcases the game's numerous "Memory Vault" sequences, with new commentary from Tim Schafer and Double Fine artist Scott Campbell.

In June, the publishing rights to Psychonauts "reverted" to Double Fine, allowing the company to publish the game without oversight from previous publisher Majesco.

Fingers crossed for when the Psychonauts story continues

Part of me certainly hopes that this is an effort to reinvigorate the IP for a sequel or spin-off, but the rest of me isn't really counting on it.

My thoughts exactly Kale...why bring spend money on a 6 year old game if they aren't planning on bringing it back in some capacity?

Haha. I remember dying so many times on the Meat Circus. Looks like it's time for a 5th playthrough.

Awesome. Since I bought it for my PC on STEAM years back, I noticed it's now available for download on me Mac. :)

I hope this means there's a bright future for STEAM and Double Fine's newer titles.

AND an Android version of the app would be awesome. My ehhhh-Pad is in recovery mode right now and even if it was working, I no longer download anything from iTunes that doesn't pertain to work.

I got really excited about the iOS app from the headline, and then I read the actual description of what it is. I'm still excited.

I also hope this means there's a future for the story of Psychonauts.
