Unity Technologies today released the latest update for its Unity multi-platform engine and development tools, calling it "one of the biggest additions to Unity since its inception."

Unity is one of the most popular development platforms for creating 3D and 2D content, and boasts over 800,000 registered developers.

This latest update, named Unity 3.5, is a free download for all Unity developers using version 3.0 or higher of the platform. It includes a new highly optimized Shuriken particle system that gives developers complete control over visual effects.

There are also improvements to AI pathfinding, a new multi-threaded renderer for lighting and HDR rendering, performance improvements and upgraded collaboration tools, including the Asset Server License which has now been renamed the Team License.

Finally, the update comes with a preview release of the Flash deployment add-on, which has been used by more than 50,000 developers to date.

David Helgason, CEO of Unity Technologies, explained, "This is one of the most spectacular additions we've ever made to Unity."

"Recognizing that Unity was being pushed harder and harder, we launched our initiative to upgrade Unity with high-end capabilities that larger studios are accustomed to and smaller studios usually don’t have access to. We want to make Unity the best choice for everyone and Unity 3.5 is a massive demonstration of our commitment to that goal."

Haven't tried most of the new features yet, but the pathfinding and new particle system are both amazing.

Gonna be a long night configuring hundred of texture importers from GUI to Advanced mode, now that Wrap Mode is gone.

Why dont you write a small editor script to automate this process for you? Takes 5 minutes...

You're assuming knowledge of being able to write an editor script, in case you didn't realize that. It might take you five minutes, but I've been trying to figure out how to write editor script for a while now, and I must say Unity's documentation is not at its most excellent, there.

It all depends on what you're trying to do. Also I refer more to forum posts then the documentation specifically because it isn't very good. That and trial and error.

I'd bet around one hour to write it, which is not a so huge gain maybe, since I'm only porting one project from 3.4 to 3.5. It's also an already released game, currently receiving updates, I'd have to manually check and test if everything went right anyway. There's a potential need for case by case analysis too.

Darcy: sorry, didn't mean that in a condescending way. I was just throwing the idea out :) Drop me a PM if you want some help with your editor scripting.

Unity 3.5 has multi-object editing so you can just select all the textures that need this change and change it once, which will then apply the change to them all.

Lod system is very simple i think unity guys should automatize it.

wondering why the article did not mention audio buffer access and the ability to create procedural audio! also webcam and Microphone input can bring lots of creative games in to live.

The new YAML based scene format is great too. scene merging can become really important in some games.
