Wasteland creator looks to Kickstarter for series revival
Wasteland creator looks to Kickstarter for series revival

InXile CEO and Interplay founder Brian Fargo has revealed that he hopes to start a Kickstarter to fund a sequel to the 1988 RPG Wasteland, a title which served as the predecessor to the popular Fallout series.

Speaking to consumer game site IGN, Fargo said he was inspired by the astronomical success of Double Fine's recent Kickstarter, and now he wants to try this type of fundraising for himself.

He noted, however, that while he does not have a set budget, a new Wasteland title could require more than $1 million to produce -- a sum much higher than Double Fine's initial goal of $400,000.

Specific details about the game itself are also scarce, but Fargo said that if the game receives enough funding, it will remain "faithful to its roots."

He explained that since he game will not be tied to a publisher, he and the team at InXile will have more freedom to create a game for dedicated Wasteland fans, rather than a large-scale, mainstream audience.

While a number of details have yet to fall into place, Fargo said he hopes to launch the Kickstarter within the next month.

The plot thickens! Will be interesting to see how things work out for experienced developers looking to use whatever capital their reputations have garnered them to achieve $1M plus kickstarter funding goals.

A "Let's Play" playlist for "Wasteland." Looks like an old school 4D (deep, detailed, difficult, can't think of another 'd') RPG.

What really made Wasteland great was how addictive it was. I've probably beaten it close to 50 times.

I thought I remember that the Wasteland game ownership (for sequel purposes) was snarled in EA somewhere, and that Black Isle/Interplay tried but failed to secure the rights before they did Fallout...

On IGN's article, it says they were recently able to reaquire the rights to Wasteland.

I'm looking forward for that one. Could be really interesting.

Holy shit. I'm willing to put some money into this.

yep, double fine didn't sell me on their project, but wasteland.... awwww yea. They can finally bring in the needle gun and that space station!

I never played Wasteland before, but I do remember seeing the game being sold in stores. The thing about the game that caught my attention was that Wasteland was rated PG-13 when it was first released for the Apple computers, and at that time, it was very rare to see mainstream games have a rating stamped in the covers. After the game was released for Commodore 64, the rating was removed, but it was still interesting to me that there was a game with a censorship rating for a while.

I didn't really play Wasteland a lot either, but I loved its spiritual successor Fallout. But I don't really care about heritage. It's just great we might get an RPG with tactical, turn-based combat for once, and in a mature, post-apocalyptic setting!
