PlayStation 3 Set For European Midnight Launch

On midnight, March the 23rd, Sony Computer Entertainment will officially release its latest console across Europe, with one million 60GB units allocated for local chains.

UK gamers will pay Ł425 ($842) for the console, with continental European price set at 599 Euros ($778), and Australian price is set at $999 Australian ($791 U.S.). Though launched solely with the single 60GB model, SCEE has previously said that the 20GB model will be offered later in the year.

The console will launch wide a wider line-up of titles than in Japan and North America, with the following full list of Blu-ray based games: Resistance: Fall of Man, MotorStorm, Genji: Days of the Blade, Formula One Championship Edition, Ridge Racer 7, Call of Duty 3, Marvel: Ultimate Alliance, Tony Hawk’s Project 8, Gundam – Target in Sight, Full Auto 2: Battle Lines, Sonic the Hedgehog, Virtua Fighter 5, Virtua Tennis 3, World Snooker Championship 2007, NBA 2K7, NHL 2K7, Blazing Angels Squadrons of WWII, Enchanted Arms, Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell: Double Agent, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, Def Jam: Icon, Fight Night Round 3, NBA Street 4 Homecourt 2007, Need for Speed Carbon, The Godfather: The Don’s Edition, Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2007, Untold Legends: Dark Kingdom and F.E.A.R..

In addition, SCEE has also revealed its full selection of downloadable titles for the European PlayStation Network at launch, including Gran Turismo HD Concept, Tekken: Dark Resurrection, Blast Factor
and Lemmings. Other titles will soon follow, including thatgamecompany's flOw on April 6th, Go! Sudoku and Go! Puzzle on April 13th and April 20th, respectively, and Super Rub a Dub at some point later.

On the backward compatibility front, Sony recently announced that new PlayStation 3 owners will be able to play 1,782 of the 2,451 PS2 games released in Europe through the console's new software based emulation as of the PS3's newly released 1.6 firmware.

The 1.6 firmware has already been released across the rest of the PS3 territories, with its support for additional PSP connectivity through WiFi, more support for full-sized keyboards, new web-browser enhancements, and the previously detailed Folding@Home distributed computing project, used to aid in calculations relating to the study of protein folding and protein folding diseases.
