PSP Offers T-Mobile Hotspot Access Through Firmware Update

With the U.S. release of its latest 3.30 PSP firmware, Sony and T-Mobile have partnered to add six months of free Wi-Fi access at more than 7,000 T-Mobile hotspot locations, followed by the ability to purchase a subscription to the service at a “special” rate.

The T-Mobile hotspot connectivity, which includes select Starbucks coffee shops, Borders bookstores, Hyatt Hotels, and more than 70 major U.S. airports, will be offered for free for the first six months.

In order to take advantage of the free trial period, users must log into the service between now and March 28 of next year, after which they will have six months of free access followed by the ability to purchase a subscription as a “special” rate.

The first video game title to take advantage of this new online functionality will be Ratchet and Clank: Size Matters, though Sony promises that additional titles supporting access to T-Mobile HotSpot locations will be released later this year.

As previously reported, other capabilities added with the PSP's latest upgrade include support for video resolutions of up to 720x480, as well as thumbnail support for video and RSS content and new functionality to the emulation of its downloadable PSone content.

"With T-Mobile's service, we're making it possible for the PSP community to connect in new ways and access the online content they want in more places than ever before,” said SCEA senior vice president of marketing Peter Dille. “More and more PSP users are going online to challenge each other in multi-player games, and we can now make it more convenient to access online gaming as well as the Internet, showcasing the rich feature set that PSP has to offer."
