Japanese Charts See Nintendo Hardware, Koei Software Dominate

Publisher Koei has gained its second Japanese number one this month, from a new title in the Musou series, following previous success with the PlayStation 3’s Gundam Musou. Musou Orochi on the PlayStation 2, provisionally titled as Orochi Warriors in the West, is a crossover between the Sangoku Musou (aka Dynasty Warriors) and Sengoku Musou (aka Samurai Warriors) series - with Orochi being a demonic dragon-like monster from Japanese mythology.

Although Orochi Musou did not open with quite the level of sales as the series at its height, it still managed over 406,000 unit sales - and is the second fastest selling game of the year so far in Japan, behind Monster Hunter Portable 2nd on the PSP.

Nintendo's Yoshi’s Island DS also continued to perform extremely strongly, with over 100,000 unit sales in its third week – making it more likely that the title will become another million seller for the format.

The second highest new entry of the week is the first Dragon Ball Z title for the Nintendo DS at number three, with a solid 65,000 unit sales for Bandai Namco. This week also saw the first game based on anime Crayon Shin-Chan for the DS, with over 38,000 unit sales at number seven.

The only PlayStation 3 title in the top fifty this week is Gundam Musou at number twenty-two, while Armored Core 4 is the only Xbox 360 title in the top fifty at number nineteen. The only other PSP title in the top fifty, beyond Monster Hunter Portable 2nd, is the fifteenth anniversary edition of Puyo Puyo! at number forty-nine.

In hardware sales, more stock was available for both the Nintendo DS and Wii, with the former up to 130,684 units sold and the latter rising to 75,571. In third place the PSP dropped only slightly to 41,546 – still benefiting from the high software sales of Monster Hunter Portable 2nd.

The PlayStation 3 also dropped slightly to 20,459 units sold, while the PlayStation 2 rose by over 3,500 units to 16,961 – apparently affected by the success of Orochi Musou. The Xbox 360 rose slightly to 3,492 units sold, while the Game Boy Advance family of consoles sold 1,394 units and the GameCube 270.
