Product: Scaleform GFx Comes To PSP, PS3

Hardware accelerated user interface and scalable vector graphics engine developer Scaleform has announced that its Scaleform GFx tools and middleware have been updated for release on both the PlayStation 3 and the PlayStation Portable.

Leveraging the power of Nvidia and Sony's RSX graphics chip, the GFx SDK is a rich media vector graphics engine for console and PC developers, combining the scalability of tools such as Adobe's Flash with hardware graphics acceleration.

Built on Scaleform's VGx vector graphics technology, the Scaleform engine tessellates vector graphics shapes into triangles that can be processed by hardware accelerators, outputting vector graphics "many times" faster than traditional software rasterizers, allowing high-performance full-screen multimedia environments such as HUDs and UIs.

Late last year, Scaleform's GFx engine announced plans to integrate the SDK into both Crytek's next-gen CryENGINE, including use in the company's upcoming first-person shooter, Crysis, as well as included in Emergent's Gamebryo game engine.

Said Scaleform CEO Brendan Iribe, "We are excited to provide the Scaleform GFx SDK for user interface development on PS3 and PSP. The Scaleform GFx architecture delivers on SCEI's vision for cinematic rich media on the RSX-based computer entertainment system. Using Scaleform GFx on PS3, developers can have the best of both worlds: artist-driven content created in Flash and hardware-accelerated high performance vector graphics delivered via RSX."
