Things aren't looking good for Prey 2, the Human Head-developed sci-fi shooter being developed for Bethesda.
The company has not spoken publicly about the game in quite some time -- going as far as to cancel recent public appearances -- and amid rumors of a cancellation on Friday the company remains silent.
Early in the day, rumors began circulating that that the title is no longer being published, with one outlet claiming that Bethesda is readying an official statement as early as next week. This comes just weeks after a no-show at the Game Developers Conference, where Human Head was set to speak about the game's development.
When reached for comment, Bethesda officials told Gamasutra that the company is not saying anything further at this time, simply noting: "Thanks for reaching out but we aren't commenting on the story."
Prey 2 was initially announced in 2008, two years after the launch of the original title on Xbox 360 and PC. Human Head said that the sequel would make some significant changes to the series, introducing both new mechanics and a brand new setting.
Currently, Prey 2 is scheduled to launch on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC sometime later this year.
The sequel from what I understand was to take place more in the future where the main (human) character is a somewhat slave to the aliens and acts as a bounty hunter of sorts. Kinda a loose premise but the shots looks pretty good.
I really hope this isn't true, everything I've read has been really positive. Seemed like a pretty ambitious project hidden behind a misleading brand name - think FarCry 2.
Rather than cancelling, Bethesda should give its developers a well deserved holiday and then start afresh with the aim to make Prey 2 the standout Xbox 1080 launch title it has the potential to be.
If the gameplay nails free running and shooting, then it'l be tragic if the cancellation rumour is true, because theres no game on the market that has done both properly yet.
Prey 2 looked great when they showed it off at PAX Prime... really hope it finds its way to market. If Bethesda doesn't want to release it themselves, they should sell it off to another publisher (unlikely I know, but I really want to play this game).
