Retail software sales in the U.S. fell by nearly a quarter last month, while hardware sales dropped by a third despite the recent debuts of Mass Effect 3 and Sony's PS Vita handheld, according to Wedbush analyst Michael Pachter.

He predicts The NPD Group, which delivers its data for March's game sales on Thursday, will report that retail software sales in the U.S. fell for the fourth consecutive month. Pachter says the game industry didn't have enough big releases, in a business that he believes is becoming increasingly hit-driven.

The analyst forecasts software revenues of $565 million for March 2012, down by 23 percent compared to March last year. Pachter admits that BioWare's Mass Effect 3 had a big debut last month and likely led software sales, but he expects its numbers to be relatively modest compared to blockbusters like Call of Duty or Grand Theft Auto.

"We do not expect a return to positive growth until May, which features Activision Blizzard's Diablo III, Take-Two's Max Payne 3, and Ubisoft's Ghost Recon: Future Soldier," he says.

Pachter also expects that total hardware unit sales slipped by 32 percent year-over-year, partly due to the launch of Nintendo's 3DS in the same month last year. While Sony just put out its new handheld, PS Vita, in February, the analyst predicts it sold only 125,000 systems in March, which he says is "meaningfully below our expectations."

"We believe the PS Vita is unlikely to match its February unit sales figure in the near future as the buzz caused by its release dies down, and TV commercials become more infrequent," says Pachter.

He adds, "We expect hardware sales to rebound once price cuts are implemented, but expect a recurrence of the dip next holiday, partially buffered by some modest contribution from the introduction of the PS Vita in February and the Wii U later this year."

I'm a little surprised by the fact Mass Effect 3 didn't at least keep sales static month to month but I'm not surprised the vita did nothing to prop up hardware sales.

Looking for forward to these numbers this week. If his predictions are true which I really doubt the Vita would have sold 100,000 fewer systems. Sony needs to do the right thing, and cut that price now.

It's quite possible, that this wouldn't be the right thing, software sells hardware and software that people want is what the Vita is lacking right now. This can lead to a situation were a price cut would only mean a bigger loss on each unit for Sony, while sales are still statgnating, while the console is seen by consumers as dead in the water weeks after launch.
The situation is different then with the 3DS, this handheld had an ok launch and sales dropped slowly in the following months, while everybody was anticipating the already announced Super Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7, games that were expected to sell well.
The Vita on the other hand launched horribly and it seems sales dropped like a stone in the following month with no game, except a CoD port in sight and unlike Super Mario and Mario Kart, it remains to be seen if CoD works as a system seller on a handheld.

Well this is where we have a real problem. The games on the Vita were targeted more at the Western audience than Eastern. So if the US gamers are not buying the games or hardware. There can only be 2 things that could be the problem. The price is too high or the Vita has no audience at all. Sony is playing the Vita the same way the did with the PS3. Instead of cutting the price ASAP due to their arrogance of a 10 year plan. The kept the system at a price that completely took them out of the US console market race. If your already losing money anyway go ahead and take the lost now. Then try to build your userbase, and get those games out there. That is what Nintendo did, and you see where they are now. I do understand that Sony doesn't have the games for a handheld still they need to do something. If they are really serious about the handheld market.
