Skyrim receiving Kinect voice command support on Xbox 360

Newsbrief: Bethesda has revealed that the Xbox 360 version of mammoth RPG The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim will receive Kinect voice integration through a free update later this month.

Skyrim launched late last year, and quickly shipped over 10 million copies worldwide. The game also picked up the Game of the Year award at the 2012 Game Developers Choice Awards last month.

The voice support, which may have originated from a Skyrim game jam at Bethesda, will add more than 200 voice commands, which range from navigating menus to performing dragon shouts.

I really loved the voice command features in Mass Effect 3 so I'm really stoked for this, I'll have to start a new game once the update comes out.

I guess thats an intresting addition but aren't they just making an easy game even easier?

I still don't understand why you need a Kinect to do voice commands... they work just fine in Binary Domain without a Kinect using your headset.

Good question. I haven't developed for Kinect myself, but can anyone comment if the mic on it is somehow easier to do voice command recognition with? Does the API provide something to that effect? And on that note, will PC users get this? Will you need Windows Kinect? Personally, I must say I love the idea, it fits the theme of the game perfectly, and makes me wish the had it as an option to begin with (or even designed around it - but why does the idea of using voice as opposed to hands as input method seem so strange?)

Doesn't the Kinnect have a chip dedicated to processing voice?

@ Joaquin,

A mod was released early on for the PC adding Kinnect support:

Kinect does have a mic array which definitely makes it easier for filtering out noise and stuff . Not saying it cannot be done using a regular headset but Kinect would make it easier i suppose.

How dull. Stop wasting your time on Kinect and make some new content!

A studio that large I am most certain they have a split team for that....besides its Bethesda OF COURSE THEY WILL MAKE SOME DLC. :-)

It would be interesting if it took your voice and added some echo and reverb to it when doing Dragon Shouts. The player, while yelling, may not hear much of their own voice played back but the echo and reverb thereafter would, and would add a bit more immersion.

A bit late for most people, but I've yet to finish my first playthrough and I think I'll give it a shot.
