The British Academy of Film and Television Arts has launched its Young Game Designers 2012 competition, with the aim to inspire young people to consider a future profession in game creation.

BAFTA hopes to demystify game development for young people in the UK, while highlighting important areas of education such as mathematics, physics and computer science which are essential for those looking to enter the video games industry.

For the first time since the competition launched in 2010, BAFTA is offering awards for both game concepts and for developed games. Previously, the contest has only required participants to come up with the concept for a game, with a Concept Award presented to the winner.

A new Game-making Award, in collaboration with Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, is now being included for those 11-16 year olds who choose to develop a game for the competition. Entrants can choose to enter either category, or both.

Both winners of the competition will see their games developed alongside game designers at the University of Abertay Dundee. The deadline for entries into the competition is 22 October 2012.
