Newsbrief: Square Enix is the first major publisher to show its support for the upcoming Ouya Android OS video game console, announcing that classic RPG Final Fantasy III will be available to download for the console at launch.
Final Fantasy III was originally released in 1990 for the NES console, and already has an Android version available via Google Play. In a statement, the company said that it is also considering providing "additional content" for the Ouya in the future.
Wow. Now I'm actually worried that, between OnLive and these big fish getting interested, Ouya's wider open game marketplace might get completely overshadowed.
@ Eric McVinney - That's not a bad idea! I myself am familiar with the Maker programs (especially RPG Maker XP and VX Ace) and I can say that those type of programs are worthwhile for indie game developers, in my opinion.
Exactly! The indie devs who focus on such a genre would swarm for such a kit. I *really* do hope Squeenix does such a thing not only to increase the driving sales of Ouya, but also for themselves as a more indie friendly company.
Don't misinterpret this. Simply another publisher saying this mainly because the game is already out on Android itself, so naturally it'll be available on Ouya via the same download service that is already being used. No change is likely going to happen other than some upscaling and porting the DS version which already has updated graphics. If Ouya doesn't happen, it'll be the same blue sky for Square.
Well, there is the optimizing for an HD television, adding controller support, removing touch screen specific HUD elements and possibly others. It will take some work to upgrade the game for use on a console/tv environment.
From what I know, this release will be based on the Android version and not the DS version.
OnLive handles one's high end, hardcore cross-platform releases; play new, native Ouya games for something unique; truckloads of Android casual/short-session apps; a sweet little retro games emulation unit; and an extra Netflix stream box so tiny, you could move it to any TV in the house.
As a $99 proposition, the Android console is getting better and better.
Hence the growing positive sentiments and confirmation of software support from larger entities.
Agreed. I also don't mind SE re-re-releasing stuff. Nothing new from them has been half-decent in a while, re-release FFVII on Ouya and now we're talking.
This is great that they're getting big-name studios to provide content, but I'm hardly excited about them re-re-re-releasing a game from 22 years ago for the console (albeit an awesome game, and a classic).
Squeenix has a LOT (can't stress that enough) of their (earlier) titles that they could re-(times 10)release onto Ouya with minimal to no issues. I just hope that they would release new content as well that would showcase more creative and unique IP.
Ouya broke the $6 million mark today with 7 days remaining on its Kickstarter.
That March 2013 first come, first serve ship date is looking more feasible every day.
Square is making an Ouya specific release.
Granted, since it's already for Android, it's likely not a whole lot of work, just adding controller support. But still, it's something extra.
