Blockbuster Expands Video Game Business

Representatives from movie and rental firm Blockbuster have announced that the company has expanded its retail video games and game hardware range at all of its U.S. stores, as part of a broader plan to “significantly expand its game business”.

The newly configured stores will offer software, hardware and accessories for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Wii and Nintendo DS from any Blockbuster store. The company is also increasing its range of products, in terms of specific titles and numbers of copies.

Rental and retail titles will be featured in specially designated game sections within stores. The company will also be implementing a number of special consumer game offers, including an exclusive $499.99 PlayStation 3 movie and game bundle featuring a 40GB console, Blu-Ray movies Spider-Man 3 and Transformers and a Blockbuster 12-week rental card for PlayStation 3 games and Blu-ray movies.

"We're committed to offering a full assortment of everything gamers want in our stores - hardware, accessories and retail and rental games across all platforms - including Nintendo Wii, Sony PS3, Microsoft Xbox 360 and Nintendo DS," said Rod Murray, Blockbuster’s vice president of games merchandising.

Perhaps they should reduce the price they charge for game rental so it is closer in line with their movie rentals.
