Ubisoft catches flak for Rayman Legends Wii U delay
Ubisoft catches flak for Rayman Legends Wii U delay

The Rayman Legends development team has been pictured holding posters that call for Ubisoft to release the long-awaited Wii U game, after its parent company delayed the title to bring it to Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

The game was meant to be released at the end of February exclusively for the Nintendo Wii U. However, Ubisoft has now delayed the release until September, as it now plans to release the game for other platforms as well.

A protesting fan called Joffrey Babilotte created banners and took images of Rayman creator Michel Ancel and his Ubisoft Montpellier team holding them. These images have since been posted to Ubisoft's Facebook page.

The photos appear to back up reports on NeoGAF earlier this week, in which alleged Rayman Legends developers took to the forums to assure everyone that the decision to delay the game was down to people "high up" at Ubisoft, rather than the development team.

Gamasutra has contacted Ubisoft for a reaction to the pictures.

Wow, that's a pretty ballsy move. Good on them!

THere is also a Youtube video that has been posted numerous times on the Ubisoft Facebook page calling out the hypocrisy of delaying Rayman to make it cross platform while not releasing other games for the WiiU.

@ E Zachary Knight - I watched that video before and I like how it exposes the double standard from the Ubisoft big wigs.

Michel Ancel is on our side!!! Please sign the petition and spread the word..... Ubisoft, we know the game is FINISHED, all you have to do is Release IT!! (At least on the e-shop!!) ............There is still time to clear the mess you've made.....

BRAVO to them for speaking up publicly! Too many people are too scared about pissing off Senior production, execs and the high up suits and it is SO refreshing to see key members of the dev team joining up with a fan to express their displeasure with the decision.

The whole thing had an interesting effect on the Miiverse of the Wii U. Since Ubisofts announcement of the delay, their U Play community is flooded with comments of Wii U owners complaining about the delay.
It seems many posters realise how easy and convenient the Miiverse is, if you want to protest against Ubisoft and the delay of Rayman.
I am not sure, what anybody will make of it, Nintendo for instance is surely happy on one side, that the Miiverse gets more attractive in the eyes of the users, there are interesting discussions between users about the gaming industry in general and what it means not to be able to buy Rayman in specific. On the other hand, they are surely not happy about the ammount of criticism and anger Ubisoft is facing right now. Because of the sheer ammount of posts, the U Play community with it's negative comments appears on the start screen of the Wii U right now, so everybody looking at this screen becomes aware of the situation.
Ubisoft on the other hand surely isn't happy about what is happening right now, but on the other side, the feedback can be a goldmine, you can be sure everybody posting on the Miiverse is a Wii U owner, a potential customer, not like on facebook, were you can't be sure who is posting and if the likes and posts don't come from bought friends.
I think when the whole thing is over, many people in the industry will start making up their mind about the Miiverse, it will be interesting to see, if they see it as a chance or as a threat.

I think Ubisoft wants decent sale for the game: not only on the disappointing Wii U.

Meaning yourself or Christian? I'm not seeing anything troll-like in Christian's comment, and found the mention of a new potential role for MiiVerse quite interesting.

@ Zirani Jean-Sylvestre - Like Chris Hendricks said, "Meaning yourself or Christian?" I myself didn't see anything troll-like in Christian's comments. Christian was simply pointing out how effective the MiiVerse is becoming in sending out the message after the whole Rayman Legends incident exploded. In other words, the MiiVerse is becoming a very useful feature from the Wii U for expressing opinions. Also, even some PS3 fans feel that the Wii U fans deserve to get the game at its original release date. In case of the PS3 fans, I believe that several of them sympathize with the Wii U fans due to going through similar problems in the past. The Ubisoft big wigs are the ones responsible for pushing the release date for a finished game for no real reason and I don't blame the dev team (who sacrificed just about everything to get the game done on time) for being upset. The only thing that the Ubisoft higher-ups accomplished is upsetting potential customers for their games. Not to mention, Rayman Legends won't be able to sell by much on September as Wii U, PS3, and Xbox 360 will be getting some big games on September that will make the fans choose the other games over Rayman Legends. Rayman Legends had the best chance of making a lot of money right now than later. By the way, Tecmo Koei may be releasing Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor's Edge for PS3 and Xbox 360, but at least, the company released the game for the Wii U without unnecessarily delaying the release date, showing respect to Nintendo and to the fans.

Meaning myself (I am being a troll), I said that so he doesn't have to reply another rant about nintendo's superiority

Ok, the wii U is a little bit out of order with the lack of "interesting things on it" so people don't buy it and editors do not want to make exclusivities so people don't buy it... (unsynchronized launch (°_¤) )

Now, the question, is it better to release the game on different platforms at the same time to increase the interest for a large range or player or to release it just AT THE SAME TIME THAT GTAV.

I think that would have been better to release the wii U version apart and I don't think it's due to technical difficulties at that time.

@ Marvin Papin - "I think that would have been better to release the wii U version apart and I don't think it's due to technical difficulties at that time." Technically, you are correct! Rayman Legends is going to have stiff competition on September, so releasing the game now for the Wii U would be a better move for Ubisoft as the company can make some serious money off of a game that's been highly anticipated by fans. Releasing the game later would be a kiss of death for it as September is expected to be big. I don't know if this is true or not, but supposedly, it is possible that Microsoft played a role on having the Wii U version of the game released at a later date as the company doesn't want for a multiplatform game to be released on other systems first and want for the game to be released at the same as the Xbox 360 version of the game. If there's some truth to that story, then that would explain the Final Fantasy XIII delay and that would be one of the reasons why the PS3 fans sympathize with the Wii U fans. Furthermore, if there's some truth to that story, then it is possible that Tecmo Koei decided to hold off its "NG3: Razor's Edge going multiplatform" announcement until the game was released for the Wii U first, so that the company wouldn't be forced to delay the release date for the game just because Microsoft told the company to do so. However, keep in mind that it is not known if the stories of Microsoft's "iron grip" are true (let alone if the company was responsible for the delay), but if the stories are true, then Microsoft is truly no better than Yamauchi.

I wonder if Wii U owners will not care about this game in September. I think any hype for this game has now went to Lego City, Monster Hunter, and now the enchanced NFS:MW port. By the time September comes along Nintendo's own big games might overshadow Rayman.
