Transgaming Launches Mac Games Distribution Portal

Software portability developer TransGaming Technologies has announced the launch of GameTree Online, a digital distribution portal for Mac video games. GameTree Online will follow the traditional retail business model with the sale of its titles, offering TransGaming a percentage of each unit sold.

GameTree Online hopes to replicate digital distribution offerings for Windows-based PC, enabling consumers to purchase and download Mac games, read gaming news, participate in promotional opportunities, and write game reviews. TransGaming plans to continually add new titles from a mix of genres to its online portal.

GameTree Online complements TransGaming’s Cider Portability, a turn-key solution for enabling games for the Mac, such as EVE Online and Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords. TransGaming hopes that supplementing the traditional retail distribution model through GameTree Online will broaden the accessibility of Mac games and will encourage more publishers and developers to publish titles for Mac.

In addition to offering global distribution for new game releases, TransGaming is offering GameTree Online to publishers and developers as a cost-effective channel to distribute their back catalog of games. Titles never released for the Mac can now be "Ciderized" and digitally distributed through GameTree Online.

Said TransGaming Technologies CEO and president Vikas Gupta: "Our GameTree Online launch marks the new age of Mac gaming around the world, and will make it easier then ever for Mac consumers to enjoy the games they love. We are expanding our current relationships with leading publishers and developers beyond Mac enablement, with our Cider Portability Engine, to offer our partners a global distribution strategy that meets the rapidly expanding consumer demand."

He continued: "This allows greater revenue generation opportunities for all parties. Cider has quickly become the industry standard for Mac gaming and with GameTree Online we plan to release new titles regularly and establish our position as the leaders in Mac games digital distribution."

Neat.. does this sound attractive to everyone here? Is the unit sale cut low enough that publishers/developers want to make use of GameTree?

One of the problems I've heard with Ciderization success is the pricing of Cider is too high.
