Report: Flagship Staff Leaving 'In Droves'
In a weblog post lamenting Hellgate: London's lack of success and describing the developer's work environment as "depressing," Flagship audio and gameplay programmer Guy Somberg claims that the studio's staff, including programmers, accountants, human resources personnel, and artists, has been leaving "in droves."

Somberg has since taken down the post but a cache of the page is still available. According to the programmer, Flagship's founders are still at the company but are working on projects outside of Hellgate: "The only one still actively on Hellgate is [technology director Tyler Thompson], but Tyler’s not programming anymore; he spends all of his time on management activities."

With rumors of even more artists and programmers planning to leave the Hellgate developer, Somberg commented, "Thing is, the way things are going I’m likely to be the only programmer still working on Hellgate left from the original crew."

Released for PCs in October, 2007, Hellgate: London's launch received criticism for its bugs, slowdowns, and crashes, among other issues. Somberg, however, has high hopes for the MMORPG in the Asian market: "Yes, Hellgate is not a big success. That sucks, and it’s depressing. I’m keeping a positive attitude about it because of Korea and China. The Koreans really love the game, and the Chinese have yet to see it."

Despite the studio's current condition, Somberg assured his readers that he had no intention of leaving Flagship: "I’m happy here. I like the people, I like the environment, I like the pay, I like the location... There’s so much good about it. I’m not considering leaving. It’s just overwhelming and depressing having all of these people go. Every time a programmer leaves, it’s more work for me. Every time an artist leaves, it’s less content that we can create for Hellgate in the future."

[UPDATE: Weblog Kotaku followed up with Flagship's marketing communications manager, web manager and writer Ivan Sulic, who commented: "We've actually had very few people leave. Flagship is still fully staffed and working on both Hellgate and Mythos... I think we have about 100 employees now."

Somberg also added in the article: "I was surprised and disappointed at the community’s response to my words, which were more directed at my family and friends to describe my state of mind at the time, than to give any sort of insight into the company. Personally, I think that the
'Towers of Hanoi' series of posts on my blog is far more interesting and worthy of commentary and analysis."]

How unfortunate.

Not surprising. Outcome on Hellgate suggests why Blizzard South had no qualms about jettisoning the Blizzard North crew that started up Flagship.

Future Headline: "Guy Somberg asked to resign from Flagship"

When are people going to learn not to blog about the inner workings of their organizations?

Re: "When are people going to learn not to blog about the inner workings of their organizations?"

Alternately, when is everyone else going to stop being so secretive and actually share pertinent information?

so much for micro transaction idea in the us!

I tried to play this game and it reminded me a very poor, poor version of City of Heroes, but with no one around and it shaped like a hallway shooter...

That sure is a lot of gossip from a dude who's supposedly "happy to be here." He sounds like an ass.

a total party foul by this guy.

flagship have a ton of great people and this kind of thing makes things hard.

hellgate is just as good as AoC and no one is out ripping that to shreds. The whole tearing down flagship bullcrap is getting old. There are great people there and I hope things improve.

Seriously, that guy needs to be fired.

@ "so much for micro transaction idea in the us!"

Isn't Hellgate a subscription-based game in the US? How do its troubles say anything about microtransactions here?

I've worked on both sides of the coin. I've worked for large and successful developers as well as the smaller struggling developer. Both of them have times that just make you want to write of about days like the ones Somberg is in. We all have ups and downs and he is clearly on the down swing; understandable with the failure of Hellgate.

It's especially hard when you are struggling to make a great product but the unknown is constantly keeping you from doing that. Low moral, and the sinking feeling that you might get laid off any day is not exactly a cheery place to be when you have a family.

If there's anything I've learned in my years; don't trust anyone above your pay grade and don't trust anyone in marketing. The business types are in that line of work because they are good spinners. I would sooner take Somberg as truth before Sulic; even in his weakened state of mind.

Media will always spin things in their favor because that is their business. They report the news. When there is no news, perhaps they must fabricate it. Regardless, this is a comment for the art staff. Your work is pivotal and no matter what you think you could make (financially eslewhere) I think you should consider continuing your work. I want to be immersed. Make relevant work. I am totally underappreciated as an artist but I am busy creating worlds for my players and it is satisfying. Remember what is important. Until the day they shit-can you, consider yourself a bad-ass and live as one. Prove your worth EVERYDAY. I work for much less and still try hard to achieve the level you are at. All I ask is that you remember how lucky you are compared to other artists.

Love and appreciation,
