Another major MMORPG is going free-to-play
Another major MMORPG is going free-to-play
May 14, 2013 | By Kris Graft

Trion Worlds' MMORPG Rift is set to go free-to-play, starting June 12, alongside the launch of its next major content update.

The move to free-to-play is a significant change for the subscription-based game, which launched over two years ago with an initial development budget of $50 million.

Rift launched as a subscription-based game as an increasing amount of MMOs were embracing the free-to-play, microtransaction-based model.

Trion said that the entire game world and all current and future updates will be available free of cost. The game will feature an expanded in-game digital storefront where players can buy virtual items like mounts and clothing.

There will also be a subscription option that gives paying players extra benefits. Other rewards are planned for current and previous subscribers.
