Newsbrief: DICE has confirmed the existence of a mobile version of its Frostbite game engine, noting that a number of Frostbite-powered mobile games are currently in development.
"Runtime in Frostbite supports a highly scalable model in order to appeal to the diverse array of platforms available on today’s market," it reads.
"Efficiency in both our runtime memory and runtime performance are both key factors to enabling code and data systems to deploy content to diverse targets from Xbox 360 and PlayStation 4 to iOS and Android."
Despite the contempt EA seems to have toward Nintendo and their fan base, this is likely first and foremost a business decision. Recently, I remember seeing the Wii U having a global install base of about 3.5 million. Currently, mobile devices have a global install base of over 1 billion. Of course not all of them are likely capable of running such an engine but it's likely far higher in number than 3.5 million. But clearly, there's a significant financial gain to grab. EA has no interest in spending money and not getting an ROI. Once the Wii U increases its install base, we'll probably see their games on the system again.
