Warner, Deadline Announce Watchmen Episodic Game

Officials from Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment have announced that the company will release its own video game tie-in to the forthcoming Watchmen movie, but as episodic downloadable content rather than a standard retail release.

The game will act as a prequel to the forthcoming movie, which adapts the critically acclaimed 1986 comic book series by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons. The film is directed by 300’s Zack Snyder, with a screenplay written by Alex Tse and David Hayter (the latter famously providing the voice for Konami’s Solid Snake in the Metal Gear Solid series).

At least two episodes will be released, one to coincide with the movie’s release in March and another for the film’s DVD release later in the year. Playable characters include Rorschach and Nite Owl, in what is described as a “mature action-brawler”.

The games will be released for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC and is being developed by Danish company Deadline Games. The studio’s previous games include Total Overdose/Chili Con Carnage and the forthcoming Faith and a .45.

"We're bringing the Watchmen universe to gamers in a distinct episodic game revealing action and combat for a great overall experience for fans," said Samantha Ryan, senior vice president of production and development at Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment. "The filmmakers have been extremely helpful in developing the high-quality game story and we are working to match the outstanding visual style of the film."

epesodic content is a wise move.. i would assume the epesodes are smaller parts of what would typically be a full game. if thats the case, I can see this strategy being a smart conservative strategy in case the game flops, they can pull the plug early... and not having to deal with physical distribution channels again, lowers risk.

every major movie has some kind of game title these days.. and i think that approaches market saturation... especially since movies come out all the time.... early on it was fresh/new to see a game come out based on a current movie..

not so much these days... now it's almost like.. "what you don't have a game for your epic new movie? something must be wrong with the movie..." so the game actually becomes a marketing liability if it doesn't turn a profit..

I think it's fair to say that most movie games are nothing to write home about, yet they probably have some of the highest budgets in order to managed dealing with hollywood / actors / etc...

in reality more times than folks probably will admit to say... "hey while the movie is going to do well, the game market can not support another epic action game". No movie is going to sit on hold waiting for the game industry market to thin out this or that given genre of games.. like when 3 major action movies come out in the same weekend.. ultimately everyone looses because audiences are split... so we'll see.. :)

i mean i LOVED batman: dark knight.. but that doesn't mean I need to buy the game and eat the breakfast cereal.. heh heh
