Second Life's death has been greatly exaggerated any number of times. According to figures from CEO Rod Humble, the game is attracting plenty of new users -- and a lot of them are sticking around.

Speaking with AllThingsD, Humble says Second Life is seeing a steady rate of new registrations. On top of that, roughly 20 percent of new registrations are still playing after a month.

"That's a massive drop-off, but it's still not too bad compared to other services."

Humble surmises that part of Second Life's persistence is that it doesn't have any real competitors. "If you want a user-made virtual world, we're kind of it. [Mojang's Minecraft has] brought a lot of younger users in, which I think is fabulous."

Linden Lab is currently working on overhauling Second Life's server performance and integration with Oculus Rift, as we reported previously.
