"When I arrived (in 2010, coming from EA), I thought it would be a core group. But well over half of our user base has been here 18 months or less, with about 400,000 new registrations a month."
-- Linden Lab CEO Rod Humble, in an interview with AllThingsD.

Second Life's death has been greatly exaggerated any number of times. According to figures from CEO Rod Humble, the game is attracting plenty of new users -- and a lot of them are sticking around.

Speaking with AllThingsD, Humble says Second Life is seeing a steady rate of new registrations. On top of that, roughly 20 percent of new registrations are still playing after a month.

"That's a massive drop-off, but it's still not too bad compared to other services."

Humble surmises that part of Second Life's persistence is that it doesn't have any real competitors. "If you want a user-made virtual world, we're kind of it. [Mojang's Minecraft has] brought a lot of younger users in, which I think is fabulous."

Linden Lab is currently working on overhauling Second Life's server performance and integration with Oculus Rift, as we reported previously.

I have heard the revenue numbers of Linden Labs from multiple independent sources and they are jaw dropping. I wish Humble would be more open about them.

If there are 400,000 new signups every month, of which 20% are retained, that is 80,000 new users a month. However, concurrency is static, if not slightly diminishing (as is the total sim count). That means that about that same number are being lost each month from the old user base. Last thing I heard was annual gross revenue for Linden Lab was about $75 million.
