PlayStation 4 'Share' feature will integrate Twitch streaming
Leading game streaming service Twitch
has announced it is bringing video streaming integration to the PlayStation 4, accessible via the DualShock 4's "Share" feature.
"Through this partnership we are paving the way for every PS4 gamer to become both a broadcaster and an avid spectator of amazing content," said Twitch CEO Emmett Shear, in a statement.
The service will allow PlayStation 4 users to broadcast live gameplay directly through their Twitch channels, accessible by web browser or other devices. As a matter of course, PS4 users will also be able to view streams from their console, free of charge.
"Social capabilities are an integral part of PS4, so Twitch will play an important role in delivering a compelling connected experience," said Shuhei Yoshida, president of Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios, in conjunction with the announcement.
Twitch was previously announced for Microsoft's Xbox One during its reveal back in May. That being said, Sony has been outlining a vision of social engagement from its first press announcement of the PlayStation 4, when it unveiled the console's controller -- including its "Share" button -- before the console itself. So Twitch streaming integration fits in nicely with this narrative.
"Twitch's gamer-focused community combined with our strong portfolio of innovative PS4 titles will help define next generation gameplay and community engagement," Yoshida continued.
