Latest Unity update introduces new 2D toolset

Newsbrief: One of the biggest updates to the Unity Engine in some time landed today, as a completely new 2D toolset was added, along with new animation tools and a major Windows Store apps upgrade.

Unity has been a 3D engine up to this point, but 2D tools for the engine were announced earlier this year. With today's Unity 4.3 update, the dedicated, streamlined 2D workflow tools are now out of beta and available to developers.

There are plenty of other updates to the engine as part of this 4.3 upgrade too. The Unity website has all the details on what to expect.

This is great. I have been waiting for their 2D tools since summer. I never really liked the asset store's methods of handling 2d.

This was a pretty big update for Mecanim as well, adding Animation Event support, blend shapes, a better scripting interface, big optimizations on animations. And dynamic NavMesh carving is pretty great too.

Went to a Unity demo night where they showed off the 4.3 features.
My favorite new feature is a tiny one, but you can (supposedly) lock layers so you don't select them in the scene window. It's the little things...

I wonder if they'll ever support more than one tag on an object.

I've been using a system where I have a bunch of scripts like TAGenemy, TAGfriendly, TAGshielded.

Then I use GetComponent() on an object to see if it has the script/tag. It would be nice to just have this built in.

Dang! Just when I bought 2D Toolkit a few days ago. LOL! I knew there was a good reason why it was on sale! :)

Oh well, I can't wait to start playing around with this stuff.
