Video game streaming service Twitch has been forced to heavily moderate streaming content on the newly-launched PlayStation 4 console, after some users have been abusing the video capture functionality to broadcast explicit images.
User-generated videos will only become more pervasive, as next generation consoles have the functionality built-in. Situations like this will only become more of a headache for companies whose businesses rely on recording and streaming of game-related videos.
The Twitch functionality on the PS4 allows users to stream gameplay on the internet for others to watch. However, the game Playroom
also allows users to stream live video from their own living room.
As reported by
Kotaku, this has led to some users abusing the functionality to stream unseemly images -- and Twitch has begun cracking down on this by banning users who are broadcasting such images.
"We continue to moderate according to our Terms of Service. Non-gaming content is not allowed," the company said in a series of tweets. "If using PS4 Playroom
, the content must be about games or gaming and within our Terms of Service."
The situation is similar to that which Nintendo found itself earlier this month, when it was forced to shutdown its Swapnote messaging service
as users were sending inappropriate images to one another.
