Video game streaming service Twitch has been forced to heavily moderate streaming content on the newly-launched PlayStation 4 console, after some users have been abusing the video capture functionality to broadcast explicit images.

User-generated videos will only become more pervasive, as next generation consoles have the functionality built-in. Situations like this will only become more of a headache for companies whose businesses rely on recording and streaming of game-related videos.

The Twitch functionality on the PS4 allows users to stream gameplay on the internet for others to watch. However, the game Playroom also allows users to stream live video from their own living room.

As reported by Kotaku, this has led to some users abusing the functionality to stream unseemly images -- and Twitch has begun cracking down on this by banning users who are broadcasting such images.

"We continue to moderate according to our Terms of Service. Non-gaming content is not allowed," the company said in a series of tweets. "If using PS4 Playroom, the content must be about games or gaming and within our Terms of Service."

The situation is similar to that which Nintendo found itself earlier this month, when it was forced to shutdown its Swapnote messaging service as users were sending inappropriate images to one another.

And it took almost no time at all!

Very much so. The headline makes it seem as if Twitch were caught totally off guard, which I hope was not the case....

This is why we can't have nice things.

Welcome to the same world since the rise of Homosapian and long before that.

@ Keith Nemitz - It's true that corruption and bad behavior have existed for generations, but it feels like that things have gotten worse on this generation. Whenever people get nice and useful things, there are some within the public that will tend to abuse those things for their personal gain or personal convenience. That's specially the case when it comes to technology that's supposed to help people communicate with each other from long distance.

I'm surprised it took that long.

And I wish Nintendo would have taken an approach like this to Swapnote spotpass. Don't nix an entire program/function--moderate said program/function..

It is a Twitch.tv TOS issue. Sony is offering the ability to stream and its up to Twitch to moderate what is put on their service. Twitch wants more users access to their service. It is not like people on their PC or with video capture cards and webcam have not done this already.

And it is going to happen worse with the Xbox One, where EVERYONE has a camera vs the optional $60 purchase of the Playstation Camera.

Worst thing that will happen is webcam function of streaming will get turned off. Even for games that use the AR webcam features.
