Minecraft on PS3 breaks 1 million sales in five weeks
Minecraft on PS3 breaks 1 million sales in five weeks
January 24, 2014 | By Alex Wawro

Newsbrief: Mojang confirmed today that it has sold over one million copies of Minecraft on PlayStation 3.

The PlayStation 3 version of Mojang's best-selling blocks game launched on the PlayStation Network on December 17 of last year with an asking price $20.

That suggests the game sold more than a million copies in roughly five weeks, an impressive feat -- though not quite as impressive as the time it sold more than a million copies on the Xbox 360 five days after being released on Xbox Live.

The PlayStation 3 version of Minecraft is the latest cross-platform leap Mojang has made, but it's not the last -- more versions of the game for new platforms are in the works, including versions for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita. Mojang is also working on a subscription service called Minecraft Realms, which is currently running in beta in Sweden and is expected to launch later this year.

Minecraft Saga was already taken?

:D. Good thing Blizzard seems to be a lot less agressive defending their IP/trademarks. I mean they could have easily claimed everything containing the term "craft".

Just curious if anyone knows the approximate gross sales of Minecraft based on PC,Xbox360,iOS,etc. Has it exceeded 1B yet?

I'd say that it's somewhere near $200m. Then, with all the merchandising from it, the gross overall would probably be around $225 mil or so.

Err, I well, I'd say $300 mil and $325 mil, actually.

Have to remember that the console versions are a fraction of the cost of the official PC version.

I see. I just remembered their website had sales stats for PC. It states close to 14 million units for PC sold. And an article states 10 million units for Xbox360, and 10 million units sold for iOS last September.

If I use the median price of $20 for both PC and console, with console at 50% commission (which I don't know anyway) and 0.7*$7 for iOS, then I get a $429 million figure.
