Newsbrief: Sony said today that its slimmer PS Vita model, originally unveiled and launched in Japan late last year, will now get a Western release at a cheaper price than the current Vita model.

The PS Vita Slim will launch in the UK on February 7, with a price tag of 180 ($298) -- around 50 ($83) less than the price of the first model, according to Pocket-Lint. Gamasutra is waiting for confirmation that the device will also launch in the U.S. around the same time.

The updated device comes with 1GB memory built-in, while the battery level has been expanded by one hour, and the handheld uses micro-USB. The Vita's OLED screen is gone, replaced with an LCD screen instead that is five inches, 16:9 aspect ratio, and multi-touch.

Can it be used as a dev unit? Also, despite the OLED/LCD drama from non-buyers of a certain age, there is a real lack of data about "tuning" a game for different gamma levels (or even detecting what levels to use).

Sad about the lack of Vita TV news, but looking forward to Sony vs Amazon hardware stories later this year.

Any idea what the US price of the new Vita will be? The current Vita is already sub-$200.

Amazon has the "import" version for about $240 but doesn't say if that even comes with a 4GB memory card :( $250 with 16GB card would be awesome but not likely until holiday season.. double :(

edit: I really liked the Khaki version of the slim but not the region locked import, but as I was THIS close to buying it, Amazon has now jacked the price to $300! People in the States need to put their money where their mouth is, buy-up the last of the OLED version, and fingers crossed, the khaki version of the slim gets here before summer (if at all).
