Newsbrief: Ubisoft plans to start selling Assassin's Creed Freedom Cry, the downloadable content pack for Assassin's Creed IV, as a stand-alone downloadable game later this month.

The game will be available for $15 on PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 on February 18, and on Steam a week thereafter.

Other than the $5 increase in asking price, there appears to be no meaningful difference between the stand-alone version of Assassin's Creed Freedom Cry and the $10 DLC version that was released last November.

It's an interesting move by Ubisoft -- if this practice of spinning off meaty DLC packs as downloadable games proves profitable, we could see a variety of brief, $10-$20 titles from AAA studios entering the market in the near future.

Could be for those that maybe bought the full game on PS3,360, WiiU, and would like to taste the updated Next Gen graphics of PS4/Xbone without rebuying the full game. Just a thought.

So how soon will we be calling sequels "full-length standalone DLC"?

Ahh the good ol' days when Epic Games released tons of bonus packs full of new levels and characters for free just for supporting the title. I miss those days :(
