The overwhelming popularity of the Twitch Plays Pokemon broadcasting channel is proving a double-edged sword, as it's causing Twitch some notable load issues.

The channel takes text strings from the live viewer chat and converts them into button presses where possible. These button presses are then fed into the classic Game Boy title.

Twitch says that the channel, which has now seen over 100,000 concurrent viewers and millions of unique hits, is causing chat issues on other channels, due to overwhelming load on the system.

The company has been forced to move the channel to its own dedicated chat server, but it's still proving an issue. You should head over to the Twitch blog post if you want to learn more.

Reinventing the wheel that is IRC (yet again) wasn't an especially great idea. News at eleven.

It's really hard for me to have any sympathy for Twitch in this. It seems like their chat is broken every other day, and this has been the case for a while.

What is so different about Twitch's IRC implementation? Do you have any reference? Any googling I do at the moment to do with Twitch and IRC just explains how to make IRC bots or links back to an article about Twitch Plays Pokemon.
