Facepunch Studios founder Garry Newman says he's already made more revenue in two months of selling Rust
on Steam's Early Access service than he has in eight years of selling Garry's Mod
on Steam proper.
that the sandbox physics game Garry's Mod
, released in 2006, surpassed $30 million in sales last Friday. He then quickly followed up with the news that Facepunch has already made more money from Rust
than it has from Garry's Mod
Newman later clarified that Facepunch has a more favorable royalty rate on Rust
as compared to Garry's Mod
, to the tune of 70 percent vs. 50 percent, respectively.
Given that Rust
also costs twice as much as Garry's Mod
-- $20 and $10, respectively -- and that Steam's userbase has grown
remarkably in the past eight years, it's not so surprising that Newman has earned more money in a far shorter timeframe with his second game, which surpassed
the 1 million copies sold mark earlier this month.
