Ziff Davis CEO Considering Shuttering Print Version Of EGM

Yesterday, publisher Ziff Davis announced it will cease distribution of the paper version of PC Magazine -- but is its lone remaining print magazine, veteran game periodical Electronic Gaming Monthly, far behind?

According to a New York Times report, Ziff Davis CEO Jason Young is not confident in its continued publication, either.

Buried in the story about PC Magazine is this snippet, which doesn't feature any direct quotes from Young: "Mr. Young said the company was considering taking its other print magazine, the video-game publication Electronic Gaming Monthly, into an online-only format, but would not make a decision before the end of the year."

Young blamed PC Magazine's online move on projected losses for the magazine in 2009 due to "fewer advertisements and rising costs", according to the NYT story. It is unclear how PC Magazine and EGM ad sales and costs compare.

He also pointed out that online had been the publication's primary focus for some time now -- a situation which is potentially mirrored with EGM. Ziff Davis currently operates games-oriented site 1UP.com, which already functions as EGM online.

The magazine and website share content and writers freely. In fact, they some time ago moved to end the distinction between online and print editors, moving its editorial staff into a more generalized pool that works on both properties. EGM also currently maintains a branded presence on the 1UP website.

Earlier this year, Ziff Davis closed its last remaining non-EGM print games magazine, when it moved Games For Windows Magazine online, as a section on its 1UP website.

I read EGM every month - along with Game Developer, thats the only print I read. As a matter of personal taste, I don't really like the website. This would be sad if it were to go this route - hopefully this is just speculation.

They already did this to CGW, and I'm pissed at them for it. When they did that I cut my EGM subscription, and called to tell them why.

EGM and 1up remain as my favorite consumer publications for games. They put a lot of hard work into their podcasts and publications. With Ziff Davis filing for bankruptcy months ago, this is the next step to them going under. I don't want to see that happen so I renewed my subscription.

Any major or minor publication with a stiff upper lip and a determination to stay in print, rather than make the understandable transformation into web-exclusivity, is admirable. All you have to do, however, is look at something as everyday as your local newspapers, for as little as 25 cents per day, and that industry has been reeling for a few years now. Then, it makes you pause and reconsider how viable a niche magazine, like EGM (and others such as certain automobile, popular science, etc.), printed on higher-cost, thicker-stock paper (and who knows what their web press ink is costing them), and it becomes easy to understand why Ziff Davis would be willing to back away from this "format" of the magazine. As we all know, and, as this article has stated, EGM already exists in another format, online, which freely shares resources between the two publication efforts.

Good to see you making your presence felt, LM.

Well, hey, it only makes sense. Who's more connected to the net than gamers? And from that point on, what's making sense in keeping a print mag alive ? It doesn't make sense for anybody, really. Regional editions of EGM have already been shuttered in the past few months, and I think shuttering the whole thing would be anything but a surprise, if it means refocusing on the online positioning.

Yea I agree Yannick, PC gamers are likely the most tech savvy group of people one can think of. That said, I still wonder why this group would pay for a magazine instead of just browsing their favorite forums and free gaming websites (like the Ziff Davis owned 1up.com)

I like being able to read game news offline while away from the computer. Print news is more portable than online news. I intend on keeping my subscription of EGM. If it gets cancelled, then I would probably seek another video game magazine to subscribe to.
