GameSpy's hosting services -- part of Glu Mobile since 2012 -- are going down for good on May 31, according to an announcement on the company's site.

The statement reads in total, "Effective May 31, 2014, GameSpy will cease providing all hosted services for all games still using GameSpy. If you have any questions about how this impacts your favorite title please contact the game’s publisher for more information. Thanks for a great ride!"

Glu ceased licensing out GameSpy's networking technology at the beginning of this year. It had already drawn the ire of clients who still relied on its middleware and services by late last year.

Nintendo, which had relied on GameSpy in the prior generation -- Wii and the original DS -- had already announced that its games for those platforms would cease functioning online as of May 20.

Now, it seems that all developers and publishers who'd relied on the tech to keep their games running will be left in the dark.

This news makes me a bit sad. I had worked at GameSpy when it was an independent company -- though not on the tech side, on the (unrelated) editorial side. Still, I have friends who worked on that side, so it's a bit sad to see the "end of an era" so to speak.

GameSpy was my first gaming website that I read regularly. I felt like I grew out of it eventually but I do have fond memories of reading their website. Was that where they had the WoW comic strip?

Yes, that was where they had the WoW comic strip. =) And the guy who wrote it, Dave Kosak, works at Blizzard now, or he did last time I spoke with him, anyway!

Nothing lasts forever, I suppose. It was disheartening to open Gamespy one day and see the big announcement that they'd wrapped up shop while I wasn't looking, and now the last traces are disappearing too.

Plenty of other fish and the sea, and the community and industry strides onwards, but there's still that attachment left to make this a sad thing to see.

GameRanger is a multiplayer matchmaking service that already supports over 600 PC and Mac games that has been live since 1999. Many of which are classics that have already had their existing services shut down. Quite a few rescued from GameSpy already.

Any affected developers or publishers should get in touch ASAP, and I'll be able to help out.

Funny I've never heard of that service until this story popped up & I used to work on the GameSpy Technology team. There are probably some larger differences in what GameRanger offers vs what GameSpy Technology offers but for basic functionality that seems like a pretty decent alternative for older titles.

GameRanger was Mac-only until late 2008, so it's mostly unknown despite hitting 5M members last month.

But yeah, there was quite a wide spectrum of what GameSpy-support actually meant depending on the game.

How about some random acts of journalism? Stuff like:
- What did GLU Mobile aim to get from buying Gamespy?
- Has it been a benefit for the company?
- Do you think the various cancellations of service (this, and earlier ones) will benefit end users?
- Would they consider open sourcing pieces so that tech savvy communities could keep things going?
- Why should I ever consider buying a game from GLU Mobile after all this?

Disclaimer: I'm still patching and supporting Battlezone II in my spare time, on my own dime. We were one of the earliest 3rd party users of the Gamespy SDK, and had a small (~200 active players per week) when GLU Mobile yanked support for BZ2 on 2012/10/08. I had to do an emergency rewrite and patch release to change over to RakNet for matchmaking, NAT Negotiation, etc. Thus, I'm not disinterested in the answers.
