Harmonix turns to Kickstarter to fund a new Amplitude
Harmonix turns to Kickstarter to fund a new Amplitude
May 5, 2014 | By Alex Wawro

The folks at Harmonix have launched a Kickstarter campaign for Amplitude, a successor to their 2003 PlayStation 2 game Amplitude.

The studio has set $775,000 as the campaign funding goal for the new game, which is planned for release on PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4.

"We've been eager to return to our roots for awhile, and develop a next-gen controller-based rhythm game," said Eran Egozy, Harmonix co-founder and CTO, during the project's pitch video. "We want to put a team together at Harmonix to make another Amplitude."

Harmonix isn't the first big studio to try and crowdfund development a new game based on a popular franchise, nor is Amplitude their only iron in the fire -- the studio is also currently working on the beat-matching first-person shooter Chroma and the musical free-to-play mobile game Record Run, as well as the motion-controlled rhythm game Fantasia: Music Evolved in partnership with Disney Interactive.

"PC support for this title is very unlikely and not in our current development plan."

Thanks for kicking me to the curb, Harmonix. I guess I'll just have to wait a few eons for a PS3 or PS4 emulator, eh?
