Rock Band 3 : Not This Year, Says Harmonix's Rigopulos

Harmonix co-founder and CEO Alex Rigopulos has confirmed that 2009 will not see a new numbered installment in the Rock Band franchise, according to a report from consumer site Crispy Gamer,

The Boston-based developer is instead concentrating on its previously-announced Beatles game, while taking time to innovate for Rock Band 3.

Rigopulos was speaking as part of a Billboard "Digital Music Live" event during the CES show currently taking place in Las Vegas, Nevada.

"We’ve actually made a choice to break out of the annual release cycle for Rock Band this year," Rigopulos said [This is] partly because the annual cycle places limits on the choices you can make as a developer. We’re trying to take a long term view."

This explains the company's choice to hold back on releasing Rock Band 3 this year. He noted that while EA would be happy with a new installment for 2009, "...they know how important this series is and they’re willing to give it the time it needs."

Rigopulos refused to give a definitive answer on whether Rock Band 3 will support a keyboard controller, settling on a "maybe."

The forthcoming Beatles game currently under development at Harmonix (and to be published by Rock Band publisher MTV Games in partnership with Electronic Arts) has no announced release date and is not part of the Rock Band series.

hmmm... surprising, considering Rock Band 2 was nothing more than Rock Band 1 with a really great new track list. As long as the DLC keeps coming like it has I think Rock Band will continue to be a big seller even without a 2009 release, but I hope EA is not over estimating the public's interest in a Beatles game. I'm sure the marketing team did their homework, but I just don't see the appeal, except to a niche older audience.

@Tom: I wouldn't be too sure. We all know that the old becomes trendy again, as you can tell by listening the Panic at the Disco's new album... I think that the indie rock audience might get a big kick out of this...

Bold move, and a good one at that. Hopefully GH takes a cue and stops trying to pump out a new game every year. GHWT is solid, very enjoyable, and can hold the interest of all users out there for a long time if they keep focusing on DLC and user OL tourneys.

Weight problems, sometimes genetic, sometimes not are on a rise these days. People’s lifestyle adds to the problem. Kids for example are getting more and more addicted to video games, which increase inactivity and various other health problems. But the problem is solved now, with “Nintendo Wii” you can work out and play a video game all at the same time. And it is ideal for people of all age groups, be it grand parents, parents and kids-wholesome entertainment for the entire family.
