Newsbrief: Microsoft will launch the PC version of its Kinect 2.0 hardware later this month, which will enable Windows PC game developers to build and release games for the voice and gesture device.

Kinect for Windows v2 will launch on July 15 and cost $199 -- you can currently preorder the device from the official Microsoft Store.

Of course, Microsoft recently decided to make Kinect non-mandatory with the Xbox One console. Notably, the price difference between the Xbox One and the Xbox One bundled with a Kinect is only $100, half of what this PC version costs.

I hope it works for PC better than it does on the Xbox One because the voice commands and gesture tracking in games is awful. Has anyone else had a really bad experience with the new Kinect?

That's quite a price premium. I guess they figure if you want it you really want it, and it's not going to be a high volume SKU.

They probably break-even or lose money on the XBoxOne SKU of Kinect.
Since they can't make money on the software with the PC, they have to make it on the SKU.
