Twitch goes all-in on game streams, shutting down Justin.tv
Twitch goes all-in on game streams, shutting down Justin.tv
August 5, 2014 | By Christian Nutt

Newsbrief: Video game streaming service Twitch got its start as the gaming section of Justin.tv, the eponymous, general-purpose online streaming service created by founder Justin Kan.

Now, as the popular service is dogged by recurring and pervasive rumors that Google's YouTube arm is on the verge of signing a deal to acquire it, it's shut down its non-gaming services.

In fact, Justin.tv is ceasing all services, including its website, mobile apps, and APIs. All users who use the site to broadcast video game content are invited to move their accounts to Twitch; all others are asked to find their own streaming solution.

The company rebranded as Twitch Interactive earlier this year, doubling down on its most successful brand (and market.) As of today, the Justin.tv website has been replaced with a shutdown FAQ.
