More: Console/PC, Business/Marketing

Newsbrief: Earlier this year, Microsoft launched the Kinect-less Xbox One in a bid to offer more options when purchasing the console. Now the company will make the Kinect available as a standalone product.

From October 7, you'll be able to purchase the Kinect sensor as a standalone product. It will cost $149.99, and come with a copy of Dance Central Spotlight.

Microsoft was keen to stress earlier this year that "Kinect remains an important part of our vision," although it's notable that there aren't a huge number of Kinect games currently in development.

MS saved $100 by removing the Kinect2 from the XBox bundle, but to buy it separately is $150. To buy what is presumably pretty much exactly the same thing but with slight tweaks for the PC is $200. I can see why it would be slightly more expensive to buy it as a standalone but not why it's twice as much. If I was a hardware dev and I had faith in my device then I'd want to price it as cheap as possible to get it into as many hands as possible. "Kinect remains an important part of our vision," or maybe they have pretty much lost faith in the device and are just trying to shift the old units they have in stock.
