When Gear VR launches, devs will need to give away their games for free
When Gear VR launches, devs will need to give away their games for free
September 24, 2014 | By Christian Nutt

At Oculus Connect this past weekend, the company outlined its plans to launch Oculus Platform, the discovery and purchasing solution for games and apps for Oculus Rift. That won't launch till later; the Rift itself is presumed to appear in 2015.

However, an early version is launching this year, alongside the mobile-based Gear VR headset that Oculus and Samsung have been developing together. There's one catch, however: You can't monetize your game in this early version of the store.

"We’re launching Gear VR without monetization in Oculus Home," Oculus VP of product Nate Mitchell told Polygon in a recent interview.

"Payments are hard. We have not rolled out our payment infrastructure as fast as we’d want," Mitchell said. "We have devs, they’re making made-for-VR games and they say 'I’m ready to sell it to all of these users,' and we’re like, 'Hold that thought for a few months.'"

Gamasutra was able to independently confirm that this fact had already been communicated to Gear VR developers.

Though the Gear VR runs on Samsung's Galaxy Note 4, an Android phone, all apps for it must be acquired via the Oculus Platform store, and not Google Play or other open app stores -- the headset and service is designed so that all VR apps are hidden when the phone is detached, an Oculus staffer told Gamasutra at the show.
